Size: 4ft 4in x 2ft 6in (133 x 77cm).

Antique Saryk Turkmen chuval face with nine large 'Salor' guls.

Circa 1880 or earlier.

A good Saryk Turkmen chuval face with nine large Salor guls and four complete minor chuval guls, the lower elem panel is filled with traditional Saryk 'flowering shrub' design. All of the whites are in cotton and the crimson colour is silk. The weave is fine; this is an outstanding example of this group of Saryk weaving.

The chuval face is in excellent condition with even wear and medium pile.

A chuval face is the decorated front panel of a large, traditional storage bag produced by nomadic Turkmen tribes in Central Asia. These bags were mounted inside yurts or used on pack animals to transport clothing and household goods.

Turkmen chuvals were predominantly hand-knotted using hand-spun wool for both warp and pile. Higher-value or ceremonial pieces often incorporated highlights of white cotton and silk to create contrast within the geometric motifs.

Authentic Saryk weavings typically display symmetrical knotting on wool warps, deep crimson or dark madder red dyes, and dense pile. They often incorporate octagonal Salor or Saryk guls with specific silk and cotton detail work.
