Antique Kizil Ayak Turkmen Audience or Mosque Carpet, Rare Example, Circa 1900.

1900 - 1920
Description

Size: 24ft 5in x 7ft 3in (745 x 220cm).

Antique Kizil Ayak Turkmen carpet of unusually large size and design.

Circa 1900.

This unusual carpet was made by the Kizil Ayak Turkmen of Northern Afghanistan, the long narrow shape (known as a kelleh) would suggest that it was made as an audience carpet, or commissioned for a specific room in a notable building or even a mosque. The carpet is made up of a design that looks like twelve smaller rugs, these could be prayer niches for a mosque. The design is very unique and I am sure that this carpet was extremely important at the time it was made.

The carpet is in excellent condition with slight even wear and good pile, this is a superb furnishing carpet that is ideal for a grand entrance hall way. There are one or two very small old historic repairs. The small spot of damage in the end kilim will be repaired.

The carpet is suitable for heavy domestic floor use.

Stock Number: DS-2428.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Kizil Ayak Turkmen carpets originate from Central Asia and were traditionally hand-woven by tribal groups. They are defined by their structured rectangular grid compartments containing octagonal geometric motifs known as guls, predominantly executed in terracotta red, dark navy, and ivory shades.

These carpets are hand-knotted using hand-spun wool for both the pile and foundation. Dyes were historically derived from natural plant and mineral sources, such as madder root for deep red tones and indigo for navy shades.

Authenticity is indicated by slight variations in knotting tension, subtle colour shifts known as abrash, and asymmetric or symmetric hand-tied knots visible on the underside. Natural dyes soften uniformly over time, distinguishing genuine pieces from synthetic reproductions.

An elongated carpet creates an impressive focal point in wide corridors, gallery spaces, or large living areas. Its terracotta and dark blue tones complement dark timber furniture, leather seating, and neutral architectural backgrounds.

Vacuum regularly using a suction-only nozzle without a rotating brush to prevent fibre pull. Address spills immediately by blotting with an absorbent cloth, and employ specialist rug cleaners for periodic wash treatments.
