Size: 24ft 5in x 7ft 3in (745 x 220cm).Antique Kizil Ayak Turkmen carpet of unusually large size and design.Circa 1900.This unusual carpet was made by the Kizil Ayak Turkmen of Northern Afghanistan, the long narrow shape (known as a kelleh) would suggest that it was made as an audience carpet, or commissioned for a specific room in a notable building or even a mosque. The carpet is made up of a design that looks like twelve smaller rugs, these could be prayer niches for a mosque. The design is very unique and I am sure that this carpet was extremely important at the time it was made.The carpet is in excellent condition with slight even wear and good pile, this is a superb furnishing carpet that is ideal for a grand entrance hall way. There are one or two very small old historic repairs.
