Antique Baktiari Kelleh

1900 - 1920
Description

This is an amazing tribal Baktiari Kelleh, circa 1890-1900, making it around 120 years old.  Quite possibly a wedding piece as the detailing of animals, people and in particular the family around the central medallion means a woman weaver could have created this to present to her family as a wedding gift.  They did this to show how skilled they were as weavers and offering the new family a gift.  Full of amazing natural dyes, the yellows are vivid and greens and reds too.  Unusual to see the crab design border as the main red border, this is more commonly used in Caucasian rugs from Azerbaijan.

A tight fine weave with a good medium high wool pile all over this Southern Persia antique kelleh.  There are some 200 villages in the region of Baktiari, who all produced beautiful rugs around the late 19th century and in some quite striking designs. Pile height is very good all over this fun and interesting piece, which would brighten a hall or corridor, there are even some original kilim ends too.  From a private collection is has been well loved and used over the years, this just shows how sturdy antique carpets are, they are meant to be used on the floor every day and enjoyed.

We offer the service of viewing any of our carpets & rugs in-situ in London, Surrey, Hampshire & the UK by appointment. Please request a home visit to view this lovely rare piece in your own home.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Bakhtiari Kelleh rug is a hand-knotted Persian carpet produced by nomadic or village weavers in the Zagros Mountains of Iran, characterised by its long, wide format (kelleh) and bold geometric tribal motifs.

These rugs feature a thick wool pile hand-knotted onto a sturdy cotton or wool foundation, employing symmetrical knots and natural dye sources for durability and rich color saturation.

Authentic Bakhtiari pieces are identified by their heavy handle, lanolin-rich wool, clear geometric or panel designs, natural shade variations known as abrash, and visible hand-bound edges.

A Bakhtiari carpet functions as an anchor in contemporary interiors, introducing rich colour palettes and geometric structure to modern minimalist rooms, traditional libraries, or hallway spaces.

Vacuum regularly without using a rotating beater bar, rotate the rug periodically to ensure even wear and light exposure, and rely on professional hand-cleaning specialists for deep washing.
