Antique Bessarabian Kilim

19th century
Description

Woven in the late 19th century, we have this wonderful Bessarbian kilim in a rare brown/aubergine toned background, the dye changes are subtle and work so well with the design to resemble flowing water.  The muted border with subtle pinks, powder blues and sage greens for the floral patterns create a lovely palette.  A rare size too for a Bessarabian kilim of this age, as usually they are much larger in size.

An unusual background colour on this kilim, as more often they were woven with blues or green tones.  In good order for its age of over 130 years old, and supplied with our sturdy anti-slip underlay, this kilim would look fantastic on the floor for another 100 years.  It would be a pleasure to show this Bessarabian kilim to you at home or at our showroom, please make contact with us in your preferred way to arrange a time.

While most Persian carpets can be classified to a specific region corresponding to their weave, this is not the case with Bessarabian carpets and rugs. With these rugs, the weave only gives clues about the market it was created for (rural or urban); therefore, a normal classification is disregarded and the broader term, "Bessarabian", is applied.

Bessarabian rugs and carpets are the commonly given name for rugs in pile and tapestry technique originating in Ukraine and Moldova during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.  Some scholars will classify flat-woven carpets as Bessarabian, while referring to knotted-pile carpets as Ukrainian. They are predominantly from an area corresponding to modern Bulgaria and Romania. Produced under late Ottoman rule, they stand right on the cusp of European and Oriental carpet weaving.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Bessarabian kilims are flat-woven rugs produced in the late 19th and early 20th centuries in the historic Bessarabia region, comprising parts of present-day Moldova and Ukraine. These textiles are renowned for combining Western European floral motifs, influenced by French Savonnerie and Aubusson designs, with traditional Eastern European flat-weaving techniques.

These rugs are traditionally hand-woven using natural wool yarns on a cotton or wool warp. They feature a slit-weave tapestry technique, creating a reversible, pileless flat surface with clear visual delineation between contrasting floral motifs and background fields.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-spun wool, subtle colour variations from natural dyes, and characteristic Western European botanical patterns rendered in a flat-weave structure. Additionally, genuine antique examples display pliable structure and slight irregularities in the selvedges and fringe finishes consistent with hand-loom construction.

A Bessarabian kilim introduces warmth and graphic pattern to contemporary spaces, making it a focal point in a living room, bedroom, or dining area. Placing it beneath neutral or modern furniture creates a textured contrast between classical floral patternwork and clean architectural lines.

Regular maintenance requires gentle vacuuming without a rotating brush attachment to prevent pulling the flat-woven fibres. Spills should be blotted immediately with a clean, dry cloth, and professional rug cleaning specialised in antique textiles is recommended for deep care.
