FAQs

Art Deco spelter sculptures gained immense popularity during the 1920s and 1930s as an affordable alternative to bronze, often featuring stylised animal and human forms reflecting the modern aesthetic of the era.

Spelter is a zinc alloy, sometimes mixed with lead or tin, which was cast in moulds and typically finished with a patinated, painted, or bronze-effect coating to mimic more expensive metals.

Authentic pieces usually display age-appropriate surface wear, characteristic flaking of the applied patination, hollow casting construction, and sometimes artist signatures or foundry marks on the base.

These sculptures serve as striking focal points on mantelpieces, sideboards, or bookshelves, complementing minimalist or eclectic decor by adding metallic texture and historical character.

Spelter is a relatively soft and brittle metal that is prone to oxidation; it should be kept in a stable environment away from moisture and cleaned only with a soft, dry cloth without abrasive polishes.
