Description

Size: 8ft 11in x 5ft 10in (272 x 178cm).

Antique Bessarabian kilim with basket design on a soft blue ground.

Late 19th century.

Bessarabian kilims originate from Eastern Europe; from an area that is now Moldova, North Western Romania and South Eastern Ukraine. Kilim production in these areas can be traced back to the 18th century and continues today in a limited capacity; the diverse cultural heritage of the region has inspired designs that are unique. The combination of colour and bold design has made Bessarabian kilims very popular with collectors and interior designers in recent years.

This example has a scarce design of two large baskets with colourful floral sprays on a very light indigo blue ground, the border is in a soft cream / ivory colour containing a linked abstract floral design. This kilim is very easy on the eye and would make an outstanding furnishing item.

The kilim is in excellent original condition with no wear or repairs. This kilim is woven using the 'interlocking weave' technique, this makes it stronger and suitable for floor use.

Bessarabian kilims originate from the historical region of Bessarabia, situated between the Prut and Dniester rivers. They are renowned for blending traditional flatweave techniques with naturalistic, often floral designs influenced by both Ottoman and Western European aesthetic traditions during the 19th century.

Authentic pieces are handwoven using traditional slit-weave or dovetailed flatweave techniques. They typically feature hand-spun wool foundations and wefts, often dyed using natural organic colourants derived from local plants and minerals.

Authentication relies on examining the tightness of the weave, the natural irregularities in hand-spun wool, and the characteristic muted palette achieved by vegetable dyes. Look for traditional motifs such as baskets, floral sprays, and distinctive border patterns typical of the period.

An antique flatweave rug adds texture, historical depth, and softness to modern spaces. It can be layered over larger neutral flooring, used as a focal point in a minimalist setting, or mounted on a wall as a textile art piece to protect it from heavy foot traffic.

Preservation requires gentle, regular vacuuming without a beater bar, keeping the textile out of direct sunlight to prevent fading, and using a breathable rug underlay. Professional conservation cleaning should be performed periodically by specialists experienced in antique textiles.
