Antique Baluch rugs are hand-knotted textiles traditionally produced by nomadic and semi-nomadic Baluchi tribes inhabiting the borderlands of Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, typically characterised by dark indigo, madder red, and brown tones with geometric or stylised botanical motifs.

Authentic pieces generally feature hand-spun wool piles knotted onto wool or occasionally cotton warp and weft foundations, utilizing natural vegetable dyes derived from madder, indigo, and walnut shells.

Authenticity is determined by examining the irregularity of hand-spun yarn, natural abrash variations in colour, wool quality, weave density, and traditional tribal border designs characteristic of late 19th- to early 20th-century production.

These rugs add grounded texture and rich heritage to contemporary spaces, working effectively as accent runners in hallways or beneath minimalist modern furniture to create visual warmth and contrast.

Preservation requires regular gentle vacuuming without rotating brushes, periodic professional specialist cleaning, and placement away from prolonged direct sunlight to prevent natural dye fading.
