Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Okimono are decorative sculptures created primarily during the Meiji period (18681912) in Japan. As traditional sword makers transitioned away from weapons manufacturing, master artisans redirected their metalworking expertise into casting detailed bronze ornaments, often reflecting naturalistic themes and subjects for domestic tokonoma alcoves and international export.

Japanese bronze figures were typically crafted using lost-wax casting (cire perdue) techniques. After casting, metalworkers meticulously hand-chased the surface to define fine features such as fur textures, followed by applying chemical patination to achieve deep brown, black, or reddish-brown tonal finishes.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit heavy cast weight, refined hand-carved detail in organic elements like fur or foliage, and a smooth natural patina from age. Many authentic Japanese bronzes also bear impressed or incised signatures (mei) from the artisan or studio on the underside.

A bronze animal sculpture functions well as a tactile accent on a wooden desk, bookshelf, or sideboard. The deep tone of patinated bronze offers strong visual contrast when placed against light stone, neutral walls, or warm timber surfaces within both traditional and contemporary interiors.

Dust the surface gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or a natural bristle brush to reach recessed details. Avoid liquid chemical cleaners, water, or abrasive polishes, as these remove original patination; a light application of neutral microcrystalline wax can be used occasionally to protect the metal surface.
