As traditional sword makers transitioned away from weapons manufacturing, master artisans redirected their metalworking expertise into casting detailed bronze ornaments, often reflecting naturalistic themes and subjects for domestic tokonoma alcoves and international export.

Japanese bronze figures were typically crafted using lost-wax casting (cire perdue) techniques. After casting, metalworkers meticulously hand-chased the surface to define fine features such as fur textures, followed by applying chemical patination to achieve deep brown, black, or reddish-brown tonal finishes.
