Born Marion Emma Chase in 1844, in Fitzroy Square in London, to the artist John Chase (who had trained under John Constable ) , and his wife Margaret Gillies a pioneer in the Suffragete movement, Marion had certainly entered an artistic family..
After training and working as a draftsperson, it wasn't long before Marion became an artist in her own right and was well known for her still life paintings of flowers and fruit, celebrated for her delicate handling, and truthful representations of the wild fruits and flowers to be found in the English countryside.- these two paintings are certainly a superb example of that.
A member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours - she also exhibited at The Royal Academy, The Royal Society of British Artists and examples of her work can be found in the Victoria and Albert Museum.
The colours of both paintings are still bright and vibrant - the bluey-purple of the plums is sublime, and you can almost feel their soft skins.
I have had both frames cleaned by Fine Art restorer James Bloomfield - they are in good order, but have the gentle surface to be expected for their age. The paintings measure 27cm by 27cm, with the images measuring 13cm by 13cm.
