FAQs

A Louis Philippe commode is a style of chest of drawers originating in 19th-century France, characterized by understated elegance, clean architectural lines, ogee frieze drawers, and minimal ornamentation that highlights the natural grain of the wood.

These pieces typically feature solid oak or pine secondary framing covered in highly figured veneer such as walnut, mahogany, or burr elm, frequently topped with a thick slab of marble.

Authentic period pieces display traditional joinery such as hand-cut dovetails on the drawer boxes, older secondary woods, hand-forged or cast brass hardware, and natural signs of age and oxidisation within the timber.

A traditional commode provides a striking focal point in contemporary spaces when paired with minimalist art, modern lighting, or simple decorative objects to create a balanced contrast between old and new.

Maintain the finish by dusting with a soft, dry cloth, avoiding direct sunlight and excessive humidity swings, and occasionally applying a quality microcrystalline wax to nourish the wood without building up residue.
