Antique Serapi Carpet

19th century
Description

A really stunning and striking vivid antique Serapi carpet woven in the late 19th century with rich brilliant dyes from the golden era of Persian weaving.  The deep intense reds combined with the dark greens and the pale green in the centre make this Serapi carpet one of the most exciting palettes. The condition for this 140 year old carpet is in extremely good original order with only minimal scattered areas of low pile.  The fringes/ends have had some preservation at both ends with minimal reweaving.  The bold geometric yet classical design is full of character and the simplistic open border design is often seen on earlier Serapi's.  A wonderful example of tribal weaving at its best a rare and stunning carpet.

Antique Serapi carpets are more intricate finer tribal weavings of the Heriz region hand-woven by Azerbaijan Turkish inhabitants close to the city of Heriz in North-West Persia. They are famous among collectors because of their vivid vegetable dyes or soft earth tones that are woven on a geometric pattern.  In terms of design, drawing, and coloration as well, Serapi carpets are clearly part of one and the same tradition as Heriz, despite being a distinct antique rug style, which originated as a Northwest Persian adaptation of early Sarouk Farahan medallion, but with a more geometric, abstract, village sensibility.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Serapi is a trade name designated for fine-quality Persian Heriz rugs woven in Northwest Iran during the nineteenth century. They are distinguished by their open compositions, bold geometric medallions, and refined dye application compared to standard Heriz production.

Serapi carpets are hand-knotted using locally sourced hand-spun wool pile woven onto a durable cotton warp and weft foundation. The vibrant tones are achieved using natural vegetable and plant dyes, such as madder root for reds and indigo for blues.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-tied asymmetrical or symmetrical knots, slight colour variations known as abrash due to natural dye batches, and a supple, flexible handle. Geometric, angular interpretations of botanical motifs and a large-scale central medallion are key structural identifiers.

A Serapi carpet serves as a foundational anchor piece in living areas or dining rooms. Its graphic geometric layout and saturated warm tones pair well with neutral contemporary upholstery as well as traditional dark wood furniture.

Vacuum regularly using suction only to avoid damaging the hand-knotted pile with a rotating beater bar. Professional cleaning should be undertaken by a specialist oriental rug restorer, and a dense underlay pad should be placed beneath to minimise friction and wear.
