FAQs

Imari porcelain refers to Japanese export ceramics produced in the Arita region and shipped from the port of Imari. It is characterised by a distinctive palette featuring underglaze cobalt blue, overglaze iron-red, and enamel or gilded highlights.

Pieces were shaped from kaolin clay before receiving an initial painted design in cobalt oxide and a clear glaze. After the first high-temperature kiln firing, additional enamel decorations and gilding were applied over the glaze and fired a second time at a lower temperature.

Authentic historic pieces often exhibit slight asymmetry, firing spur marks on the underside, and subtle variations in the hand-painted decoration. The underglaze blue often shows depth and slight bleeding into the glaze, while overglaze enamels may display light surface wear consistent with age.

Imari plates work well placed on a brass plate stand atop a dark wood sideboard or mounted as part of a gallery wall. The rich blue and rust tones complement neutral minimalist backdrops as well as traditional timber furnishings.

Hand wash gently using lukewarm water and mild detergent, avoiding abrasive sponges that could scratch the overglaze enamels or gilding. Never place historic porcelain in a dishwasher or soak pieces with existing hairline cracks.
