Watercolour Painting of Coastal Scene with Boats - English, 1893 - Lennard Lewis Ra (1823 - 1913)

19th century
Description

Here is a super English coastal scene, likely of the East coast- full of life and vibrancy, signed by the 19th century painter Lennard Lewis RA.

The sun is casting its final golden rays over a frothy blue sea, as sea birds swirl over the returning boats and the harbour buzzes with life.

I really like this painting for its colour and detail - a snapshot of busy Victorian coastal life, fishing drifters, a paddle-steamer tug pulling a clipper in, to join the others who's masts tantalisingly appear over the harbour wall - rowing boats, fishing smacks and an array of sailors and fishermen.

A beacon stands on top of the cliffs, ready to guide the ships to safety.

Lennard Lewis was born in London in 1826 and went on to become a Watercolourist specialising in English landscapes, and in particular coastal scenes. A well received artist, he exhibited at the Royal Academy, the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, the Grosvenor Gallery and the Royal Institute of Watercolour Painters, as well as exhibiting works in Manchester, Liverpool and Leeds.

The painting is in good condition with bright string colours, and comes in its glazed gilded frame, measuring 72cm by 42cm, the actual image 53cm by 22cm.

Please do not hesitate to get in touch if I can offer any further information or photographs.

I offer free delivery throughout mainland UK, and am very happy to help with quotes for shipping abroad.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

British maritime watercolours from the late 19th century typically depict coastal topography, fishing vessels, and atmospheric marine light using translucent water-based pigments on paper.

Artists utilised watercolour pigments applied to heavy cotton rag paper, often presented within gilded wooden frames featuring deep mounts to protect the artwork.

Authentic works from this period usually feature period-correct framing, natural ageing or light foxing on paper, artist signatures, and traditional gilding on carved wooden frames.

Position the piece above a wooden sideboard or fireplace mantel to create a focal point, pairing it with neutral wall shades to complement the golden frame.

Display the painting away from direct sunlight and damp conditions, and clean the glass frame gently with a dry microfibre cloth without applying liquids directly.
