William Cannon (British, b. c.1840) was a late 19th and early 20th-century marine watercolourist specialising in sailing vessels, fishing boats, harbour scenes and coastal subjects. His work is characterised by carefully observed traditional craft, lively seas and finely detailed maritime figures. Cannon’s marine watercolours have been offered by Christie’s, including A Beached Fishing Vessel on the Norfolk Coast, signed and dated 1902, a pair entitled Fishing Boats Returning to Harbour, and a group of four works entitled Shipping off the Pier.

Items which are presented in frames are usually the old original frames which came with the artwork. We would typically only remove the frames if they were severely broken or damaged. In line with our conservation ethos, we believe that a painting should be sold within its original setting rather than re-presenting in a contemporary mount & frame unless necessary. Customers also prefer to choose their own way of presenting their painting or engraving. Frames therefore WILL have wear, discolouration or damage in line with their age.

When we value and sell artwork, we provide the frame free. We do not accept liability for damage caused to frame in transit. We are more than happy to remove frames before posting at the customer’s request.

Condition:

Good antique condition overall some mild foxing but colours remain attractive. . Frames have light age-related wear. Please study all photographs carefully as these form part of the description.
