Description

A superb antique Victorian Wellington mahogany chest of drawers. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1850-1870’s.

It is of amazing quality and has a slightly more unusual design than most Wellington chests. It is larger than usual, with a run of central turned mahogany handles on the drawers. It has the usual locking mechanism seen on Wellington chests, with lovely carved corbels under the cross banded top.

We have had this recently re-polished, the condition is excellent for its age. There is just some minor wear remaining beneath the polish here and there, overall this has a gorgeous patina.

A Wellington chest is a tall, narrow chest of drawers typically featuring a hinged locking side flap that secures all the drawers simultaneously. Originating in the early 19th century during the Regency period, its design became immensely popular throughout the Victorian era for securely storing papers, linen, and personal items.

These chests were predominantly crafted from dense tropical hardwoods such as mahogany, often featuring flame or figural veneer on the drawer fronts. Traditional construction methods include hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawer boxes, solid secondary timbers like oak or pine for drawer linings, and turned wooden knob handles.

Authentic pieces feature period-appropriate joinery such as hand-cut dovetails, traditional shellac or wax polish finishes, and working locking mechanisms with original brass or steel key escutcheons. Look for natural ageing characteristics in the timber, including oxidisation and shrinkage cracks consistent with nineteenth-century manufacture.

The narrow vertical proportions make these chests ideal for compact spaces, corners, or alcoves where standard dressers will not fit. Pair the warm mahogany tones with neutral walls and minimalist contemporary decor to highlight the rich timber grain and create a sophisticated focal point.

Maintain the timber by keeping the piece away from direct sunlight and artificial heat sources, which can cause the wood and veneer to dry out and split. Dust regularly with a dry lint-free cloth and feed the wood periodically with a traditional microcrystalline wax polish to protect the finish.
