Huge Pollard Oak Credenza

19th century
Description

A huge pollard oak credenza of fabulous quality. Very likely to have been made by either James Lamb or Thomas Turner, both of Manchester and amongst the most respected cabinet makers in the country. The superb pollard oak veneers are all laid on solid mahogany and the central cupboards are both fitted with drawers and a large cellarette. The design is simple, yet very imposing. The bowed ends have stepped terminating columns with carved lozenges and all the cupboards are crossbanded and have ebony inlay. The centre section also has carved lozenges below a pair of superbly carved lions masks, complete with snarling teeth. The top also has ebony inlay with the front edge with a bold bowed and concave moulding. The overall condition is very good with no splits or cracks and is ready to use.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian pollard oak credenza is a substantial storage cabinet produced during the 19th century, crafted using timber harvested from pollarded oak trees to display dense, intricate burl patterning. These pieces typically feature enclosed cupboards, curved or breakfront silhouettes, and elaborate hand-carved architectural details.

These cabinets are constructed using solid oak frameworks veneered with highly figured pollard oak. Decorative elements often include ebonised wood inlays, hand-carved corbels or masks, and precision-fitted panel doors anchored by traditional mortise and tenon joinery.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joints on internal drawers, original cast brass or iron locks, secondary woods such as pine or mahogany for drawer linings, and natural variations in the timber grain indicating hand-finished craftsmanship.

To integrate a substantial timber credenza into modern interiors, balance its visual weight by pairing it with neutral wall finishes, large-scale abstract art mounted above, and minimalist ceramic or glass decorative objects on top.

Preserve pollard oak surfaces by applying a high-quality beeswax polish twice yearly following the direction of the grain. Maintain stable room humidity, wipe spills immediately with a dry cloth, and position the furniture away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent timber movement or finish fading.
