Dealers Notes

Our stock includes early oak and walnut furniture from the 18th century, as well as more formal pieces from the Georgian period. Clocks, barometers and globes are complemented by Colonial cabinets, furniture and early arms. Their scientific instruments, which include early microscopes, telescopes and equipment such as sextants, provide a fascinating insight into the evolution of technology, whilst demonstrating fine artistry and craftsmanship. One of Hansord’s many exhibitions was entitled ‘From simplicity to complexity with a little eccentricity’ and this continues to be the guiding mantra behind their collection today.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Cape Dutch furniture combines 18th-century European design forms, particularly Dutch Baroque and Rococo influences, with local timber species and craftsmanship techniques from Southern Africa.

These chests were typically crafted using dense native hardwoods such as stinkwood or yellowwood, alongside imported mahogany, secured with hand-cut dovetail joints and solid brass hardware.

Look for hand-carved drawer fronts with distinct raised and recessed vertical blocking, hand-hammered brass escutcheons, hand-planed back panels, and natural wear around the drawer runners.

A dark timber block front chest acts as a strong anchor piece in a contemporary hallway, living room, or bedroom, pairing well with minimal lighting and modern wall art to highlight its carved silhouette.

Keep the wood away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking, dust regularly with a soft microfibre cloth, and apply a thin layer of natural beeswax annually to protect the original finish.
