FAQs

The Georgian style spans the reigns of the first four British kings of that name, characterised by classical proportions, symmetry, and the transition from walnut to mahogany as the primary timber.

Cabinetmakers predominantly utilised solid mahogany and pine for secondary woods, complemented by brass swan neck handles, escutcheons, and hand-cut dovetail joints.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetails, handmade rosehead iron or brass nails, shrinkage cracks appropriate to age, and hand-planed drawer bottoms rather than modern sheet materials.

Pair the warm timber tones with minimalist modern art, a simple ceramic lamp, or neutral walls to create a balanced contrast between historic craftsmanship and clean lines.

Keep the wood away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent splitting, and feed the timber periodically with traditional beeswax rather than modern silicone polishes.
