Description

Antique Mahogany Serpentine Chest of Drawers

An attractive antique mahogany serpentine chest of drawers, in the Georgian style, displaying a beautifully figured mahogany grain and a rich, warm colour throughout.

The chest features an elegant serpentine-shaped top with a moulded edge, above a brushing slide and four graduated drawers, the upper drawer arranged as two smaller drawers. Each drawer is fitted with decorative brass swan-neck handles and traditional brass escutcheons.

The shaped drawer fronts are beautifully veneered in flame mahogany, creating an attractive and symmetrical grain pattern. The front corners are further enhanced with carved geometric decoration, adding an elegant architectural detail.

The chest stands on four shaped bracket feet, with the serpentine design continuing through the lower moulding, giving the piece a particularly graceful appearance.

A charming and practical piece of furniture, offering generous storage while retaining elegant proportions. Ideal for use in a bedroom, dressing room or entrance hall.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE EDWARDIAN ERA:
Blind fret carving on the canted corners: quality Georgian revival cabinetmaking.
Very thin, symmetrical flame veneers across the drawer fronts: modern mechanical timber slicing.
Gentle rubbing and light rounding at the bracket foot bases: decades of domestic use.
Cast brass rococo handles and escutcheons: decorative fittings favoured in turn-of-the-century revival furniture.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

A serpentine chest of drawers features a outer facade that curves outward in the centre and recedes at the sides, a style popularized during the eighteenth century in Georgian Britain.

Primary construction materials include solid mahogany and mahogany veneers, with oak or pine used for secondary interior drawer linings and solid brass for hardware.

Authentic pieces generally feature hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, original cast brass fittings, hand-carved bracket feet, and distinct age-related patination on unexposed surfaces.

Positioning a mahogany chest against light neutral walls creates balanced visual contrast, while pairing dark timber with contemporary artwork bridges traditional and modern aesthetic schemes.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft cloth and apply a quality natural beeswax polish periodically to maintain moisture, avoiding direct sunlight and proximity to central heating sources.
