Antique Timuri 'Palas', Sangtschuli Sub-tribe, Borderlands of North-east Persia / North-west Afghanistan.

19th century
Description

'Palas' or flat-weaves of the Timuri Sangtschuli tribe are incredibly rare and this is one of the finest flat-weaves from this tribe that I've come across. In excellent condition and with just a few small areas of expert restoration on the selvedges, the fine soumak work has to be seen to be appreciated.

It is incredibly sophisticated work for a tribe, living in very inhospitable conditions during the mid 19th century, and using a ground loom to weave this remarkable piece.

The last similar Sangtschuli Palas to pass through my hands is illustrated in the third edition of my book 'Tribal Rugs - Treasures of the Black Tent' on page 94. However, what is more unusual about this piece, is the wide goat-hair selvedges - unique and extremely rare.

These flat-weaves are generally referred to as 'Baluch' in the unknowledgeable trade but in fact, are woven by the Timuri - Sangtschuli tribe on the borderlands of eastern Persia and western Afghanistan.

On a separate note, for those interested in these amazing Palas weaves, see the recently published book 'Baluch Textiles - Back to the Roots' by Jorg Affentranger and Wolfgang Windau. Highly recommended.

Size: 2.70m x 1.60m (8' 10" x 5' 3").

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
