Haynes King (1831-1904 British) a Large Antique Victorian Painting Signed

Description

A skilful study of a woman by Victorian genre painter, Haynes King (1831-1904).

King was highly regarded towards the end of the 19th-century for his depictions of everyday working class homes. Paintings such as ‘Morning Gossip’, ‘The Letter Writer’, and ‘Industry’ celebrate the simple passing moments of regular Victorian life.

One of these, ‘Jealousy and Flirtation’, is currently held in the collection at the Victoria and Albert Museum and several are on display in public galleries.

But aside from his interior scenes, King also enjoyed painting fisherwomen waiting patiently for the day’s catch. Works such as ‘Awaiting the Return of the Boats’, ’Reverie’, and ‘Waiting for the Fleet to Return’ all adopt a similar theme.

In this particular study, the young lady painting entitled:

"While Pensive, I thought of my Love"

The painting is housed within a gilded 19th-century foliate frame with a reeded inner border.

Medium: Oil on Canvas Size including frame: 29” x 25” / (73.7cm) x (63.5cm)

Year of creation: c. 1870's. Signed bottom right hand side.

Provenance: Private Collection, England. United Kingdom.

Condition: Artwork in excellent overall condition. Relined. Frame in perfect order and well cherished. Ready to exhibit immediately.

Artist's Auction Highlight: £14,764 achieved for 'Flute Player At The Forest Edge' in 2009 (70cm x 62.5cm).
