In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

An Edwardian Chippendale style chest on stand takes the form of a tall, narrow mahogany storage unit rendered in a warm brown timber. The structure incorporates five graduated drawers arranged vertically, fitted with brass swan-neck handles and individual keyholes. A decorative blind fretwork frieze runs along the top section beneath the flat surface. The base stands securely upon carved cabriole legs terminating in claw and ball feet, while the wood displays minor signs of age and use across its polished surfaces. Practical dimensions measure 134 cm high by 61 cm wide and 47 cm deep, providing substantial vertical storage while occupying minimal floor space in a home. Placement suits various living areas where vertical storage is required, functioning effectively in a hallway, bedroom or dressing room to hold folded garments, linens or accessories. The narrow profile allows this tall chest to fit comfortably against walls in compact rooms or corridors without blocking walkways. Traditional English country house aesthetics complement period interiors, study spaces or reception rooms as a characterful accent piece that combines display surfaces with enclosed storage capacity.

FAQs

A chest on stand, also known as a tallboy or highboy, is a furniture form comprising a chest of drawers set upon a raised, legged base. Originating in the late seventeenth century, this design elevates storage above floor level to protect contents from dampness while adding visual lightness.

Traditional Georgian chests on stand are predominantly constructed from solid or veneered mahogany, frequently featuring oak or pine as secondary drawer lining woods. Key craftsmanship details include hand-cut dovetail joints, carved cabriole legs, blind fretwork friezes, and cast brass swan-neck handles.

Authentic pieces feature signs of historical hand-craftsmanship, such as hand-sawn drawer bottoms, hand-cut dovetail joints, and age-consistent oxidisation on internal drawer timbers. Original brass fittings typically demonstrate hand-chased details and matching patination.

A mahogany chest on stand acts as a vertical focal point in hallways, dining rooms, or bedrooms without overwhelming small spaces due to its elevated leg framework. Pair it with neutral wall treatments, modern artwork, or minimalist table lamps to highlight its architectural silhouettes.

Position the piece away from direct sunlight and central heat sources to prevent the wood veneer from drying, checking, or fading. Dust regularly with a soft cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice per year, buffing along the grain.
