FAQs

Chinese pith paintings are delicate watercolours created on a spongy, paper-like material sliced from the pith of the Tetrapanax papyrifer plant, typically produced in Canton for the export market during the 19th century.

Artists used plant-derived pith paper, vibrant watercolours, and gouache inks, frequently mounting the fragile sheets onto silk-bordered paper albums or framing them under glass.

Authentic pieces exhibit a distinctive velvety, light-reflecting texture characteristic of pith paper, delicate hand-painted detailing with vibrant pigments, and often show minor ageing or oxidisation around the edges.

These delicate works suit traditional and eclectic spaces, often mounted on narrow wall spaces or above a sideboard where their fine detail can be appreciated up close.

Pith paper is extremely fragile and sensitive to moisture and light; items should always be framed behind UV-protective glass and kept away from direct sunlight and high humidity.
