Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

A Wellington chest is a tall, narrow chest of drawers characterised by a hinged locking flap or stile on one side that secures all the drawers simultaneously. Originating in the early 19th century, it was traditionally used in gentlemens dressing rooms or studies to store shirts, documents, or valuables securely.

These cabinets are typically constructed using a softwood or hardwood carcass veneered with highly figured decorative wood veneers such as burr walnut or mahogany. Traditional construction features hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawer boxes and solid brass hardware including drop handles and locking mechanisms.

Authentication involves examining the drawer linings for hand-cut dovetails, inspecting the wood for age-related shrinkage and oxidisation beneath the carcass, and verifying that the locking side stile operates correctly with an original or period-appropriate brass lock and key mechanism.

Due to its tall and narrow footprint, this piece functions exceptionally well in compact bedrooms or studies where floor space is limited. Pairing it with contemporary minimalist furniture creates a striking contrast that highlights the rich grain and warm tone of the wood.

Preservation requires maintaining stable room humidity and temperature away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent veneer lifting or timber splitting. Regular gentle dusting and occasional applications of microcrystalline wax help maintain the finish without damaging the antique polish.
