Copper Cauldron Jardiniere / Plant Bowl, with Three Lion Mask Feet - 19th Century

19th century
Description

Here is a lovely 19th century hand hammered English copper cauldron Jardiniere with a beautifully rounded bottom, standing on three brass lion masks, each with lions feet.

The copper has a wonderful rich dark patina, but could be polished up if that is the finish that you prefer.

The Jardiniere stands 22cm tall, and is 28cm across the top. It is a really handsome looking bowl, and has the surface wear that you would expect of a well loved piece of this age with the occasional dings that give it its character. As the photographs show, it displays beautifully.

Please don't hesitate to get in touch of I can provide any further photographs or information.

I provide free delivery throughout the uk, and am more than happy to help with quotes for shipping abroad.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the nineteenth century, copper jardinieres were popular decorative vessels used to display indoor flora in European households. Often designed with Classical or Gothic revival motifs such as lion masks and paw feet, these metal containers served both functional and decorative roles in reception rooms and conservatories.

These vessels were primarily formed from sheet copper, shaped through hammering or spinning techniques. Supporting elements, such as feet and handles, were typically cast in brass or bronze and riveted or brazed directly onto the body.

Authentic period pieces often feature hand-brazed or dovetailed construction seams, heavy cast brass components, and irregular hand-hammered surfaces. Natural age indicators include uneven interior verdigris, surface patina, and historic wear around the base and joinery.

A metal jardiniere can be positioned as a tabletop centrepiece, placed on a sideboard, or displayed within a windowsill. It pairs well with natural foliage, dark timber furniture, and neutral stone surfaces to provide metallic contrast.

Regular dusting with a soft, dry microfibre cloth maintains the surface finish. To prevent corrosion from moisture when housing live plants, use an internal waterproof liner rather than placing soil directly against the metal.
