Antique Sarab Runner

19th century
Description

A rare, small size tribal runner from Sarab runner woven around 1870, early dyes and designs.  Fantastic 'Boteh' motifs at both the top and bottom in the camel coloured border of this antique Sarab runner.  Lovely tribal motifs in the side camel coloured border too, nice natural off white wool used for the minor border and diamond motifs, really lifts the whole palette.  Excellently drawn and well spaced out motifs, a fabulous 150 year old piece.

Some minor restoration is apparent on this runner along the side-cords, with old wrapping.  A very attractive tribal runner woven in East Azerbaijan which is one of 30 provinces in north-west Persia.

Sarab is famous for good quality runners and rugs and their design is almost always geometric, with repeating medallions.  More often the medallions are hex-column, meaning the hexagons are attached to each other through the length of the runner like we see on this piece.

Purchase this antique Sarab runner online from us and we shall securely courier it to your home, with our excellent anti-slip rug underlay which is included in the price.  Or contact us to view it at our barn showroom in Crondall, Surrey.

Request a home visit to view this wonderful rare antique runner in your own home, please let us know a preferred day and time to see you.  As we have travelled all over the UK visiting customers as far as Norfolk, Scotland and Ireland over the last 30 years.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating from Northwest Persia, Sarab rugs are renowned for their long, narrow runner formats, geometric diamond medallions, and distinctive camel-coloured fields.

These runners are hand-knotted using hand-spun wool or natural camel hair on a cotton or wool foundation, utilising natural dyes to achieve earthy tones.

Authentic pieces display natural colour variations known as abrash, hand-knotted wool construction visible on the underside, and minor geometric irregularities inherent to village looms.

A tribal runner adds warmth and textural depth to narrow spaces such as hallways, entryways, or alongside a bed, harmonising well with neutral flooring and timber finishes.

Vacuum regularly on a low setting without a rotating beater bar, blot spills immediately with a clean dry cloth, and utilise a underlay pad to prevent slipping and pile wear.
