How do I adjust the height?

Many vintage and antique floor lamps use a sliding inner tube secured by a side screw key or clutch mechanism. Loosening the key allows the upper shaft to rise or fall before tightening to hold the position. Heavier models require a steady hand to support the weight while adjusting, ensuring the internal mechanism engages correctly without jamming the metal tubing.

Are these lamps safe for modern wiring?

Many older standing lamps require rewiring to meet current electrical standards. Buyers should expect to have older brass fixtures checked or rewired by a qualified electrician before daily use. Original lamp holders and wiring can degrade over decades, so updating the internal cord ensures safe operation with contemporary bulbs.

How do I identify the period?

Stylistic clues such as floral openwork and flowing organic lines point toward Art Nouveau designs from the turn of the century. Heavy classical columns and stepped bases often indicate Victorian or Edwardian manufacturing. Construction methods, patination on the brass and the presence of makers' marks on the base help narrow down the specific decade of production.

Where should I place a reading lamp?

These tall fixtures suit placement directly beside an armchair, sofa or desk where directional light is most beneficial. The adjustable stem allows the light source to hover above reading material. Consider the reach of the flex and the weight of the base to ensure the lamp stands stable on carpets or hardwood floors without tipping.
