What is a Staffordshire transferware platter?

A Staffordshire transferware platter is a ceramic serving dish decorated with a printed blue and white design applied from an engraved copper plate. These pieces originate from the Georgian and Victorian periods, functioning as large serving platters, meat dishes, and charger plates for the dining table.

How do I date a transferware platter?

Dating relies on stylistic clues, ceramic bodies such as pearlware versus later earthenware, and recorded manufacturer marks or pattern titles. Periods represented in the evidence span the Georgian and Victorian eras, ranging from eighteen hundred through to eighteen sixty.

What are transferware patterns?

Transferware patterns are pictorial designs printed onto ceramic bodies using cobalt pigment transferred via engraved plates. Examples include specific named scenes such as India Temple, zebra pattern, Chinese Marine, Water Dog, Chinese Garden, Canovian Statues, and Gorhambury.

How were meat platters used?

Meat platters served large joints of roasted meat at the centre of the dining table during formal meals. Some variations incorporate a gravy well to catch meat juices, assisting with carving and serving during nineteenth century dinners.

Can I use these platters for serving food?

These antique ceramic pieces can serve dry foods, though many buyers choose to display them on walls or dressers as decorative art. Careful hand washing preserves the lead glaze and cobalt pigment against modern dishwasher detergents.
