Where should I hang a large arched mirror?

These pieces traditionally anchor the wall space above a fireplace mantel, where their proportions balance the hearth below. Placing them opposite a window also maximises the reflection of natural daylight across the room. Ensure the wall construction and fixings can support substantial weight, as nineteenth-century wooden and gesso frames are remarkably heavy. Professional installation using appropriate mirror plates ensures the piece remains secure.

How do I identify a Victorian overmantel mirror?

Victorian examples frequently feature robust carved wood and gesso frames with decorative motifs such as rope twists, tulip carvings, or heavy cresting. They often display generous dimensions designed to dominate nineteenth-century domestic interiors. Checking the construction of the timber backing boards and the fastening methods provides further clues to the period. Original fixings and undisturbed backing paper help confirm the age of the piece.

Foxed glass refers to the speckled, aged appearance caused by the gradual breakdown of the silver backing over many decades. This natural oxidation creates atmospheric dark patches within the reflection. Rather than a defect, this ageing process is valued by collectors as evidence of authenticity. It distinguishes genuine antique mirrors from modern reproductions.

How do French and English mirrors differ?

French mirrors from the nineteenth century, particularly Louis Philippe styles, often favour simpler, elegant arched outlines with subtle beaded or channelled frames. English overmantel variants tend to be heavier, incorporating elaborate gesso ornamentation and deep mouldings. Both origins utilise carved wood and gesso over mirror glass, but the aesthetic restraint of French pieces contrasts with Victorian English exuberance. Examining the framing profile usually reveals the regional origin.
