What is a georgian crystal wine goblet?

It is a heavy drinking vessel produced during the eighteenth or early nineteenth century, typically fashioned from lead crystal with a distinctive stem and bowl form. These pieces were used for formal toasts and everyday dining, reflecting the advanced glassmaking techniques of English and Irish furnaces during the Georgian era.

What is the difference between a rummer and a wine glass?

A rummer is substantially larger and heavier than a standard wine glass, designed for hearty portions of ale, punch, or robust wine. They often sit on sturdy bases with bucket-shaped bowls and heavy cutting. Wine glasses from the same period tend to have more delicate proportions, featuring trumpet, ogee, or bell bowls supported by twist or baluster stems.

Why do some glasses have folded feet?

Glassmakers folded the outer rim of the foot underneath during manufacture to reinforce the edge against chipping during use. This practical technique also added pleasant weight and balance to the base of the vessel. Folded feet appear frequently on baluster and balustroid drinking glasses from the mid-eighteenth century.

How should I display heavy crystal?

Display these items on sturdy wooden surfaces or within stable cabinets where their refractive qualities catch natural light. Ensure each piece has adequate spacing to prevent accidental contact with other glassware. Because lead crystal is heavy, stable shelving is essential to support the combined weight of multiple goblets and rummers.
