Where should I place a lamp table?

These tables fit easily beside sofas, armchairs, or beds where a small surface is needed for lighting or books. Freestanding versions also suit open spaces in a room where all sides remain visible. Because many examples feature finished marquetry on every side, they do not need to rest against a wall. Paired pieces work well flanking a bed or positioned symmetrically in a hallway.

How do I care for marquetry surfaces?

Keep wooden surfaces away from direct sunlight and excessive heat sources to prevent the veneer from drying or lifting. Dust regularly with a soft dry cloth. A light application of appropriate wax helps nourish the timber and protect the finish without building up residue. Avoid placing damp items directly onto the unsealed wood.

What is the difference between an occasional table and a lamp table?

An occasional table serves general, flexible purposes around a room, moving as needed for drinks or books. A lamp table specifically provides a stable surface designed to hold a light fixture. In practice, makers and dealers often use the terms interchangeably due to similar sizing. Many pieces on this page fulfil both roles depending on the room layout.

How can I tell a nineteenth-century piece from a later revival?

Nineteenth-century tables often show hand-cut veneer work with subtle irregularities in the timber grain and traditional joinery methods inside drawers. Ormolu mounts on these pieces typically feature finer hand-chasing. Later revival pieces from the early twentieth century may display more uniform machine-sawn veneers and standardised internal construction. Examining the secondary timbers inside the frame helps clarify the period of manufacture.
