Black Lacquer Occasional Table
A black lacquer occasional table brings a dark surface and gilt figures into a room, offering a small stage for lamps or books.
Black Lacquer Occasional Table
A black lacquer occasional table spans a variety of forms, from tilt-top wine tables and nested sets to card tables and multi-tiered étagères.
The selection ranges across the nineteenth century into the early decades of the twentieth, drawing on Regency, Victorian, and Edwardian tastes.
Design influences shift from Chinese Export and Anglo-Burmese works to domestic interpretations in Chinoiserie and Queen Anne styles.
Materials and construction
Tables utilise wooden carcases, ebonised timber, and papier-mâché foundations built to receive multiple layers of dark lacquer.
Surface ornament relies upon gold leaf, hand-painted details, brass fittings, and occasional mother-of-pearl inlay to create contrasting highlights against the black ground.

Black Lacquer Occasional Table: Frequently Asked Questions
How are these tables cleaned?
Dust surfaces gently with a soft dry cloth to protect fragile lacquer and gilt details.
Avoid liquid cleaners and damp cloths, which can penetrate hairline cracks and damage the historic finish.
Can a lamp sit on them?
Most occasional and lamp tables in this group easily support small table lamps and decorative items.
Heavier lighting should be avoided to prevent undue strain on delicate nineteenth-century timber frames and papier-mâché.
What is a tilt top?
A tilt top incorporates a clever pivoting mechanism beneath the surface that allows the table top to swing into a vertical position.
This historical feature saved valuable floor space in smaller period parlours and rooms when the furniture was idle.
Are nested tables sturdy?
Sets of nested tables are built to be light and portable while maintaining adequate stability for everyday placement.
The smaller tables slide neatly into the master frame, ensuring convenience without compromising the structural integrity of the set.
