What is an antique side cupboard used for today?

These cabinets serve multiple domestic purposes, frequently functioning as bedside tables, lamp stands, or hallway storage units. Their enclosed shelves and drawers accommodate books, lighting, and household items. Larger configurations adapt well as decorative display surfaces or compact sideboards in living spaces, blending practical storage with historical character.

How do I date an antique side cupboard?

Dating relies on examining the timber species, construction methods, and stylistic motifs present in the woodwork. Georgian and Regency examples often display linear proportions and flame mahogany veneers, while Victorian pieces incorporate heavier carvings or burr walnut. Later Edwardian and Art Deco iterations introduce lighter satinwood finishes, geometric lines, or alternative materials such as pitch pine and oak.

Are bedside cabinets and pot cupboards the same thing?

Pot cupboards represent a specific historical category of bedside cabinet originally constructed to enclose a chamber pot. They typically feature a single door opening to reveal a compact interior space. Modern usage treats them interchangeably with standard bedside tables and cabinets, though period terminology often distinguishes the enclosed pot cupboard from open shelf designs.

What woods were commonly used for these cabinets?

Mahogany, walnut, and oak form the primary structural timbers across most periods. Cabinet makers utilised these durable woods both in solid form and as substrates for decorative veneers. Exotic or lighter woods like satinwood, rosewood, harewood, and burr walnut appear on finer decorative pieces, often accented with brass hardware and marble tops.
