What is the difference between a vitrine and a pier cabinet?

A vitrine is primarily glazed on multiple sides to allow comprehensive viewing of objects from various angles. These cases focus on transparent display space for porcelain and collections. A pier cabinet is traditionally built to stand against the wall between windows, frequently featuring a solid timber door or single glazed panel. These pieces often incorporate elaborate marquetry and ormolu mounts rather than full glass surrounds.

How were display cases used in nineteenth century interiors?

These cabinets occupied formal reception rooms and salons where hosts exhibited their imported porcelain, sculpted figures and collected curiosities to guests. They served as functional status symbols that protected fragile items from dust while displaying refined tastes. Table-top bijouterie cases were placed near seating areas so guests could inspect smaller items like medals, snuff boxes and jewellery at close range. Wall-hanging versions maximised floor space in smaller domestic settings.

How do I identify Louis XV revival styling?

Louis XV revival pieces display asymmetrical curves, naturalistic leaf motifs and flowing cartouches executed in carved wood or cast ormolu. The forms avoid straight lines in favour of undulating serpentine shapes and cabriole legs. Cabinet corners on these items frequently curve outward, supporting scrolling mounts that soften the architectural edges of the timber carcase.

Are the marble tops original to these cabinets?

Most marble tops on nineteenth-century French furniture were fitted during initial production to complement the ormolu mounts and heavy timber carcases. These stone slabs provided durable, decorative surfaces above the display compartments. Inspect the seating of the marble within the wooden moulding to verify its integration with the frame structure.

How should I care for velvet-lined interiors?

Vacuum velvet linings gently using a soft brush attachment to remove dust without crushing the pile. Avoid exposure to direct sunlight to prevent the textile colours from fading over time. Keep humidity levels stable within the room to protect both the delicate fabric lining and the underlying timber carcase.
