How were antique earthenware vessels used?

These vessels served various domestic, medicinal, and storage purposes in daily life. Apothecary jars held medical drugs, while larger pots stored wine, oil, and dairy products. Other forms functioned as table ware, including teapots, jugs, and basins. Many survivors transitioned over time from utilitarian kitchen tools into decorative display items.

How do I care for an antique earthenware vessel?

Keep these fragile ceramic pieces away from direct sunlight and areas subject to sudden temperature fluctuations. Dust them gently with a soft dry cloth. Avoid using water or cleaning agents on porous bodies and historical glazes. Handle them carefully by the body rather than relying on delicate handles or rims.

How can I tell different periods apart?

Study the characteristics of the clay body, the composition of the glaze, and the style of decoration. Earlier pieces often display heavier potting techniques and hand-mixed mineral pigments. Later Victorian and 20th-century items frequently show industrial standardisation alongside revival styles. Examining kiln marks and base signatures helps establish the date of manufacture.

Tin glazing involves adding metallic tin oxide to an opaque white glaze mixture. This technique provides a smooth surface for painting detailed polychrome designs. Potters utilised this method extensively on European earthenware to imitate expensive imported porcelain. It remains a defining feature of Delftware and majolica.
