Their interiors often feature bespoke compartments lined with velvet, silk or leatherette.

How were knife boxes used?

Knife boxes stood on sideboards in dining rooms during the Georgian and Victorian periods to keep blades clean and accessible for meals. Servants brought them out when setting the table for dinner. Later canteens and trays served a similar purpose, organising larger services of flatware within domestic households. Their fitted interiors kept individual spoons and forks from scratching against one another.
