This early Victorian ladies writing desk originates from England around 1850. Constructed from mahogany, it displays rich caramel hues and fine grain interest beneath a waxed polish, complemented by a wide black leather skiver inset to the top with Greek key tooling. The fascia holds an arrangement of five drawers, including a left bank disguising a cabinet door, all dressed with warm brass foliate circular ring pulls. Shaped brackets with carved swirl accents accentuate the central kneehole arch, and the table rests upon a slender quartet of turned legs with collared details. Measuring 74.5 cm high, 96 cm wide, and 48.5 cm deep, this petite correspondence table provides a practical surface suited for study spaces, home offices, or living rooms. The kneehole offers a comfortable height of 59.5 cm for seating, while solid joints and construction ensure everyday usability for correspondence and writing tasks.

A Victorian writing desk typically features a rectangular top inset with leather, a configuration of drawers around a central kneehole, and turned or carved legs characteristic of mid-19th century English cabinetmaking.

These tables were primarily crafted from solid woods and veneers such as mahogany, oak, or walnut, complemented by brass hardware and gold-tooled leather writing surfaces.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, natural patination on brass handles, period-appropriate secondary timbers inside the drawers, and age-consistent wear on the lower turned legs.

Position the desk against a feature wall or near natural light, pairing it with a contemporary desk lamp and a tailored chair to balance the rich timber finish.

Dust the timber regularly with a microfibre cloth and apply beeswax periodically, while gently cleaning the leather skiver with a dry cloth and keeping it away from direct heat sources.
