Description

Here is a large metal flask with a cork stopper decorated all over with flowers and patterns in rich colours against a black background, executed in an attractive naive style. The bottle is made from metal sheets beaten together, which form a watertight bond.

The bottle stands 34cm tall with its wooden stopper in, and is 24cm wide and 17cm deep.

As displayed in the photographs, the bottle is very much in a 'used' condition with the knocks and scrapes of well over a hundred years of love and wear, but personally I think this adds to its charm.

I am also selling a smaller bottle ( please see separate listing ), so should you wish to purchase both, I would definitely look to give a discount for the pair.

I offer free postage to the UK and can help organise quotes for shipping abroad.

Please don't hesitate to get in touch if I can offer any further information of photographs.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

These flasks were typically crafted in various regions of India during the 19th century for utilitarian or ceremonial purposes, often featuring traditional hand-painted motifs influenced by local craftsmanship.

They were generally constructed from alloyed metals such as brass, copper, or iron, shaped into spherical or lenticular forms, and finished with hand-applied pigments and protective lacquers.

Authenticity is determined by examining the patina of the metal, the wear on the hand-painted surface, traditional construction methods like seam welding, and the characteristic pigments used in 19th-century Indian folk art.

Such decorative objects work well when displayed on bookshelves, mantelpieces, or side tables as standalone sculptural elements or integrated into a globally inspired eclectic arrangement.

Keep the item away from direct sunlight and high humidity. Clean only with a soft, dry cloth; avoid using water, chemical solvents, or abrasive polishes that could damage the delicate painted surfaces.
