Description

This is a quality set of Chinese gouache watercolour studies of birds which date from the mid 19th Century. The paintings depict the birds in naturalistic settings and are extremely well executed. Painted on pith in strong gouache colours, all four are in really good condition for their age. Each is framed by a single narrow peach ribbon as was typical of the time and they have more recently been mounted and displayed in champagne gilt frames which suit them well.

The four pictures measure 42.5 cms by 35.5 cms including the frames.

We do have two other sets currently available, same size and frames but different birds. Please see our other listings.

FAQs

Traditional Chinese bird and flower painting, known as hualiao, has roots dating back to the Tang dynasty and gained prominence as an independent genre during the Song dynasty, often embodying symbolic meanings related to nature, seasons, and virtues.

Authentic pieces are typically created using mineral pigments or watercolours applied to silk or handmade rice paper, often mounted on silk brocade borders and framed with wooden supports.

Identification involves examining the quality of brushwork, the texture of the silk or paper base, signs of natural ageing such as oxidisation or toning, and the presence of traditional artist seals or calligraphy.

These pieces can be integrated into modern spaces by hanging them as a balanced gallery wall arrangement to create a focal point, pairing them with neutral walls to highlight the delicate colours and textures.

To preserve these delicate items, display them away from direct sunlight and high humidity, and use UV-filtering glass and acid-free mounting materials when framing.
