Description

Very decorative and well proportioned French Louis XV style walnut and brass mounted freestanding bureau plat with a gilt embossed leather top, circa 1900.

This would also make a fabulous dressing table with either a standing mirror on the top or a wall mounted mirror.

Lovely shape to this piece with the curved top helping it to free stand without any harsh corners.

The leather top is in good condition, a rich dark tone so it will work alongside fabrics etc.

There is one central drawer to one side only, whilst the rear is fully brass mounted and has a “faux” drawer.

Great piece of decorative but very useable French furniture.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

A bureau plat is a type of freestanding writing table that originated in France during the late 17th century, gaining immense popularity through the Louis XIV, Regency, and Louis XV periods as formal writing and administrative furniture.

These tables are traditionally constructed from fine hardwoods such as oak, walnut, or mahogany, often featuring veneered surfaces, gilt-bronze orormolu mounts, and inset tooled leather writing surfaces.

Authenticity is identified through period-correct joinery methods, hand-cut dovetails in the drawer construction, natural ageing of the wood and leather, and the quality of the cast bronze or brass mounts.

Position the desk centrally in a room as a freestanding focal point, pairing it with a contemporary or vintage upholstered chair to create a sophisticated balance of old and new design elements.

Maintain the finish by dusting regularly with a soft, dry cloth, applying a quality beeswax to the timber periodically, and treating the leather inset with specialised leather cream to prevent cracking.
