FAQs

Animal portraiture gained significant popularity during the 18th and 19th centuries as affluent patrons sought to commemorate beloved pets and domestic animals, reflecting changing social attitudes towards animals.

Traditional oil paintings typically utilised pigment mixed with linseed oil applied to stretched woven canvas, often housed within moulded and gilded wooden frames crafted from gesso over wood.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit characteristic craquelure in the paint surface, hand-stretched canvas with period tacking, and construction features on the reverse frame consistent with historical manufacturing methods.

Pairing classical oil paintings with contemporary furnishings creates a sophisticated eclectic contrast, allowing the historic artwork to serve as a focal point against neutral walls.

Oil paintings should be kept away from direct sunlight and high humidity fluctuations, avoiding chemical cleaners and relying instead on professional conservation assessments for cleaning.
