Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1900s:
Boxwood stringing to the drawer and door fronts: cabinetmaker's work from the Edwardian revival.
Slender square tapered legs with spade feet: standard design of the early 1900s.
Embossed brass oval backplates: stamped metalwork popular at the turn of the century.
Compact serpentine front: proportioned to fit smaller twentieth-century dining rooms.

This Georgian style sideboard takes the form of a mahogany buffet finished in a warm brown tone with visible wood grain and a good patina. The piece stands upon square tapered legs terminating in spade feet, featuring an open arched apron beneath a central drawer, which is flanked by two side cupboards with brass hinges and keyholes. The drawer and cabinet doors display fine boxwood string inlay outlines, complemented by oval brass drop handles on embossed backplates, while the serpentine top surface echoes these decorative line details. The construction incorporates solid timber panels and traditional joinery methods suited to regular daily use. Measuring 81 cm high, 122 cm wide, and 53 cm deep, the compact dimensions suit placement in a dining room, hallway, or living area to serve as a serving surface or display stand while providing practical concealed storage behind the cupboard doors and within the central drawer. The traditional English country house aesthetic integrates smoothly into classic and transitional interiors as a functional storage unit.

FAQs

Georgian sideboards, prevalent from the mid-18th to early 19th century, are characterised by classical symmetry, delicate proportions, and refined timber veneers. Designs popularized by Thomas Sheraton and George Hepplewhite featured slender tapered legs, intricate string inlay, and curved bow-front or serpentine facades.

Primary construction utilized high-grade mahogany for visible surfaces, valued for its structural stability and deep reddish-brown timber grain. Secondary timbers such as pine, oak, or poplar were employed for internal drawer linings and framing, often paired with cast brass hardware and satinwood or boxwood inlay.

Authentic period examples demonstrate hand-cut dovetail joints, hand-sawn back boards with uneven tool marks, and original brass fittings showing natural patination or oxidisation. Cabinet interiors display light surface wear consistent with age, and drawer bases typically feature hand-planed timber boards.

A Georgian sideboard serves as a functional focal point when placed along a dining room or hallway wall, balanced by contemporary artwork mounted above it. Combining dark mahogany tones with neutral plaster backdrops and modern ceramic accessories creates a balanced contrast between historic craftsmanship and minimalist aesthetics.

Preservation requires regular dusting with a dry microfibre cloth and routine applications of clear beeswax polish to protect the finish. The piece should be positioned away from direct sunlight, radiators, and damp walls to prevent timber shrinkage, veneer lifting, or finish discolouration.
