Description

Dating from the late 19th century this elegant antique Tabriz carpet has gorgeous soft colours, with muted pinks, hints of muted yellow and grey tones.  A wonderful palette of natural colours, easy to place in a drawing room, under a dining table or a study.  These decorative antique carpets from Tabriz are classical in their look and can work in many rooms. The soft palette is due to the carpets age, woven around circa 1880-1890 the dyes would have been much stronger and fade to give a wonderful saturated feel.

The soft pale blue dyes are exquisite and highlight the carpets stunning central medallion which has beautiful 'Boteh' designs in the medallion.  We can see in the main border design the Cartouche which has writing inside, we have been told is a poem, often these appear in antique Persian carpets from the 19th century.

Some wear is apparent and scattered over the carpet, but nothing significant or major wear.  The pile is finely cut all over and with supplied with our durable carpet underlay, this helps preserve antique carpets for many years, we hope for another 100 years of use.

We offer the service of viewing any of our carpets & rugs in-situ in London, Surrey, Hampshire & the rest of the UK & Europe by appointment.  Request a Home Visit to view any of our carpets and rugs in-situ, we would love to help you find the perfect rug for your home.

An antique Tabriz carpet is a hand-knotted rug originating from the city of Tabriz in north-west Iran, historically one of the oldest weaving centres in the region, known for fine craftsmanship and intricate designs.

These carpets typically feature a wool or cotton foundation with a dense hand-knotted pile made from high-quality wool, sometimes accented with silk highlights, utilising asymmetrical or symmetrical knots.

Authentic pieces are identified by examining the knot density, irregularities in natural dyes, hand-spun wool characteristics, traditional medallion or all-over floral motifs, and the specific construction of the fringe and selvedges.

An antique carpet can be styled as a grounding centrepiece in contemporary living rooms or dining spaces, pairing well with minimalist furniture or leather seating to create a balanced contrast between old and new.

Preservation requires regular gentle vacuuming without a beater bar, professional washing by a specialist in antique textiles every few years, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent fading, and using a quality rug underlay.
