Description

An exceptional Mahal wool carpet, both in terms of the design and colours. The colours are all exquisite, derived from natural dyes, while the repeating floral design is executed in an elegant and stylish manner, ideal for living areas or a study. This carpet has survived the generations in truly excellent condition, with only minor traces of use. The original ends are intact and the pile is even and glossy. We have cleaned this carpet and it is ready for immediate use. A tour-de-force.

FAQs

Mahal carpets originate from the Sultanabad region of west Persia and were produced extensively from the late 19th century onwards, often tailored for Western export markets with grander scales and softer palettes.

These rugs are traditionally hand-knotted using hand-spun wool for the pile, set upon a cotton foundation, and dyed using natural vegetable and mineral colourants.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-spun wool with characteristic abrash colour variations, characteristic large-scale floral or trellis motifs, and non-uniform hand-knotted foundation fringes.
