FAQs

Old Sheffield Plate is an early form of silver plating created by fusing a thin sheet of sterling silver to a thicker copper base, typically produced between the mid-18th and mid-19th centuries before the invention of electroplating.

Georgian tankards were often hand-raised from sheet metal, featuring soldered seams, cast handles, and hinged lids with thumbpieces, frequently displaying copper bleed where the underlying base metal shows through wear.

Authentic pieces often exhibit visible copper seams along edges or wear points where the silver layer has thinned, a heavier weight due to the copper core, and a lack of modern electroplate maker marks.

An antique metal tankard can be utilised as a decorative shelf accent, a sculptural vessel for dried botanicals, or styled on a sideboard to add historical texture and metallic contrast to modern schemes.

Preservation requires gentle cleaning with non-abrasive silver polishes to avoid wearing away the delicate silver layer, handling with soft cloths or gloves to prevent oils from tarnishing the surface, and storing in a stable environment away from high humidity.
