This Continental commode from the 1800 period is executed in a French Neoclassical style. Constructed from walnut and fruitwood, it displays warm brown tones across its geometric parquetry inlay, complemented by a dark grey marble top and ormolu mounts. The breakfront form incorporates brass ring drawer pulls, raised panels on the sides, and slender cabriole legs terminating in simple feet. The surfaces show subtle variations in the timber grain and minor softening to the gilt metal finish from age. The chest measures 90 cm high, 115 cm wide, and 48 cm deep. Placed in a hallway, bedroom, or living area, this chest of drawers provides display space on top alongside practical storage within its three-drawer bank. The formal lines and restrained neoclassical motifs suit traditional interiors as well as transitional spaces seeking a refined antique accent piece.

FAQs

A Continental parquetry commode is a European chest of drawers originating in the 18th century, characterized by geometric wood veneer patterns known as parquetry. These pieces typically feature decorative brass or ormolu mounts and are frequently finished with a shaped marble top slab.

These commodes are constructed using a solid hardwood frame, typically oak or pine, covered in fine wood veneers such as walnut, kingwood, tulipwood, or rosewood arranged in geometric patterns. The top surface usually features a heavy slab of local or imported marble, complemented by cast brass or bronze hardware.

Authentic period commodes exhibit hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, hand-planed back panels, and irregular wear consistent with age on the drawer runners. Look for natural patination on the wood, original cast brass fittings showing hand-chasing, and a marble top cut and contoured to fit the specific dimensions of the cabinet body.

A marble top commode serves as a striking focal point in a hallway, dining room, or bedroom. Contrast its detailed woodwork and dark marble by placing contemporary art above it, or balance the traditional aesthetic with simple ceramic vessels and minimalist lighting.

Clean the wooden veneer surfaces using a soft dry cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish occasionally, avoiding silicone-based sprays. The marble top should be wiped down with a damp cloth and mild neutral soap, avoiding acidic cleaners that can etch or dull the stone finish.
