This Persian Malayer rug dates from circa 1890 and is woven from wool and cotton with natural dyes in red and navy blue. The deep red central field displays a geometric floral grid, a repeating lattice pattern, and spandrel corners, enclosed by a multi-stripe border. The surface exhibits a thin, fine pile with a soft texture, set against light blue and sapphire blue accents. Measuring 190 cm high and 145 cm wide, the piece offers a practical scale for placement as a floor covering in living spaces, studies, or bedrooms. It suits traditional interiors and English Country House decorative schemes, bringing warmth and pattern to rooms with wooden flooring or neutral carpets. The item is professionally cleaned and prepared for placement in a home today.

Malayer rugs originate from the Malayer region in western Iran, produced predominantly during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. They are recognized for their individualistic designs, combining refined urban floral patterns with rustic tribal geometric motifs.

These rugs are hand-knotted using hand-spun wool pile woven onto a durable cotton foundation. Natural vegetable dyes, derived from sources such as madder root and indigo, produce deep shades of red, navy, and ivory.

Authenticity is indicated by natural dye color variations, known as abrash, along with asymmetric or symmetric hand-knotted construction visible on the reverse. Slight irregularities in the geometric proportions and consistent wear patterns further distinguish antique pieces.

A red antique rug provides warm contrast on dark wood or neutral stone floors in contemporary spaces. It functions effectively beneath clean-lined furniture, serving as a grounded anchor in neutral or eclectic room schemes.

Vacuum regularly using a suction-only setting without a rotating beater bar to protect the hand-spun wool fibres. Address spills immediately by blotting with cold water and a clean cloth, and consult a specialist carpet restorer for professional washing.
