This Chinese daybed dates from the Qing Dynasty style period around 1890 and is constructed from dark brown hardwood. The design incorporates a stepped backrest fitted with grey marble panel inserts, a carved apron, scroll feet, and a tufted light brown fabric upholstered cushion. The timber surfaces display a polished finish and are recorded as being in very good condition, while the non-original cushion remains very usable. The dimensions measure 178 cm wide, 74 cm tall, and 76 cm deep. Such a daybed fits well in a living room, study, or spacious hallway as a statement seating option. It functions practically for relaxing or reading while adding traditional craftsmanship to an interior. The sturdy hardwood frame supports daily use, and the neutral tones of the wood and fabric integrate easily with various decorative schemes. The piece stands independently against a wall to highlight the detailed backrest and carved woodwork.

FAQs

Originating in traditional Chinese furniture design, day beds served dual purposes for sitting during the day and sleeping at night. These low-slung platforms feature open frame construction, carved aprons, and often stepped backrests with decorative panel inserts.

Traditional Chinese day beds were crafted using dense hardwoods such as Zitan, Huanghuali, or Hongmu, joined with complex mortise-and-tenon construction without metal nails. Secondary decorative features frequently included carved aprons, inlaid marble panels, and woven or upholstered seating pads.

Authentic pieces showcase precision joinery like floating panels and mortise joints, hand-carved relief motifs, and natural wear patterns on the wood surface. Examining the underside reveals hand-tool marks and structural framing consistent with traditional Asian joinery techniques.

A Chinese day bed acts as a structural focal point in a living room, hallway, or study. Interior designers balance its architectural lines and rich dark timber tones by layering textured throws, neutral bolster cushions, or positioning it against modern minimalist backdrops.

Maintain the timber frame by dusting with a soft, dry cloth and applying a clear beeswax polish along the wood grain annually. Keep the item away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber movement or cracking, and clean upholstered cushions with specialised fabric cleaners.
