This Regency fine art painting is an English School full-length oil on canvas portrait depicting a seated lady wearing a blue gown and lace bonnet, set beside a window with a garden view. The artwork includes an inscribed signature lower right with the date 1827 and is housed within an original gilt gesso frame showing ornate corner scrolls, leaf mouldings, and rich golden tones. The canvas measures 65 cm high, 54.5 cm wide, and 4.5 cm deep including the frame. It has been relined and well restored prior to acquisition. In a contemporary home, this piece suits placement above the mantel in a living room, study, or hallway, adding traditional character to classical and eclectic interiors. The subdued dark background contrasts with the bright blue fabric of the sitter's dress, while the warm gilt frame complements traditional wall colours and period furnishings.

FAQs

Regency portraiture during the 1820s typically emphasised realistic character depiction, elegant contemporary attire, and understated interior or landscape backdrops.

Paintings from this era were primarily rendered in oil on woven flax canvas and presented within carved composition or timber frames finished with gold leaf.

Authentic pieces generally display natural age craquelure across the paint surface, original canvas stretching marks, period timber joinery on the stretcher bars, and hand-applied gilt finishes.

Position the artwork as a central focal point above a mantelpiece or side cabinet in a contemporary space, pairing historical tones with neutral wall finishes.

Keep the canvas away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and high humidity, dusting gently with a dry, soft-bristled brush rather than liquid cleaning agents.
