Large Russian Painted Icon in Oklad,c1890

19th century
For Sale by Curious Antiques
Description

Large late 19th century Russian icon,c1890. The painting is obviously sealed in the frame but looks to be an oil of Madonna and child on wood panel .The silver metal Oklad (frame)has marks that look like silver /makers marks but they are rubbed and so I cannot be sure it is silver. There is also Cyrillic script on the frame/Oklad. The Oklad is nicely decorated and is nailed to the wood panel containing the painting. The painting has rubbed and is a little indistinct but this does not detract from the overall composition and feel of the piece. The Icon is backed in material. Please refer to the detailed photographs and feel free to contact me if you would like to view the item or have any questions.

This late nineteenth-century Russian Orthodox icon depicts the Virgin Mary and Child beneath a chased metal oklad cover. The piece belongs to the Imperial Russian style and is made from brass, silver plate, wood, and egg tempera, showing a silver and dark brown colour scheme with exposed dark fabric visible within the oklad openings. The chased floral border frames a pierced halo and structured drapery folds, while Cyrillic script appears alongside rubbed maker's marks on the metal surface. The painting on the wood panel shows age-related rubbing and an indistinct finish. Measuring 22 cm high, 17.5 cm wide, and 2 cm deep, the artifact suits display on a mantelpiece in a traditional interior setting. The oklad is nailed to the wooden backing panel, and the reverse is backed in material, completing a devotional piece designed for upright surface placement.

A Russian icon with an oklad, also known as a riza, features a protective decorative metal cover placed over a painted wooden panel, designed to protect the image while highlighting key elements such as halos and drapery.

These icons typically consist of a wooden panel painted with egg tempera, overlaid with a repousse or chased metal oklad made from brass, silvered brass, or solid silver.

Authentic pieces feature period-appropriate metalwork techniques like chasing and repousse, natural timber backing, hand-painted details visible beneath the metal apertures, and potential maker hallmarks on the oklad.

Displaying an icon on a library bookshelf, a decorative mantelpiece, or within a curated gallery wall creates a historical accent alongside traditional or contemporary furnishings.

Dust the surface gently with a soft dry microfibre cloth, avoid harsh chemical cleansers that can damage surrounding tempera paint, and store the piece in an environment with stable humidity levels.
